For some winter might mean it’s time to move your workout indoors, but I actually prefer working out in the great outdoors during the colder months. There’s something about not letting a cold, dark morning get you down that is truly invigorating. Plus, there’s no better motivator for getting a move on than freezing your butt off.
My winter fitness routine, like my routine year round, starts with my dog, Spencer. He needs to get walked every day, rain or shine, in 30 degree weather or 90. He has a lot more energy in the cooler months and so do I. Our regular route involves seven flights of stairs (that's them above) and a very large hill. I take the stairs two at a time to make it more of a quad workout. I’ll stop along the way to add in sets of lunges, squats, push ups and tricep dips. Sometimes I’ll do skater lunges or mix it up with one-legged squats—anything that gets my blood flowing.
It can be hard to get out of bed when it’s still dark out, but I’m rewarded with a nearly empty park, gorgeous sunrise views and extra energy that lasts all day long.
