As a beauty blogger, it’s always tempting to test out what are billed as the “latest and greatest” products on my own face. After sitting through a splashy presentation, complete with a dermatologist and slides and often a video at a press event, I’m often convinced that whatever product is being introduced—even if it’s for oily or acne prone skin and, therefore, completely inappropriate for my skin type—it is the one for me that will erase all my skincare concerns and make my complexion bright, clear and flawless.

I’ve learned my lesson the hard way—through dry, flaky irritated skin—that while these products may be ideal for the right person, what is best for my skin are gentle products that are free of harsh chemicals, fragrances and dyes. On most days, all I really need is a soap-free cleanser and moisturizer, making sure it has SPF for the daytime, of course.

Two of my new favorites for a back-to-basics skincare routine are the Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Moisturizing Facial Wash and Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturizer. The facial wash has a creamy texture that’s perfect for cold winter days. In addition to being 100-percent soap-free, the cleanser has Pro-Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E, plus other skin-loving ingredients. Plus, the moisturizer offers 12 hours of moisturization!

After two weeks of using these products, my skin is soft and supple and I’ve realized that all I really need for bright and clear skin is a gentle face wash and effective moisturizer without a lot of added ingredients. I’ll never be tempted to run myself into a guinea pig again!
