Review: Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate

With the name “Daily Reviving Concentrate” and a promised "revitalizing blend of [oils]", it's as if this product was made for me. A good night's sleep is, shall we say, elusive for me these days. My 7-month old will sleep through the night occasionally, will wake up once around 2 a.m. more typically and every now and then will have a night that goes completely off the rails (Blame teething, I think.) So when this serum found its way to my desk, I put it at the top of my "to test" list.

The idea behind the concentrate is that it gives skin a defense system during the day to help fight back against oxidation and protect your skin's barrier. "Free radicals that come from pollution, UVA/UVB radiation and poor air quality assault our skin the most during the day and have the potential to damage our lipids, proteins and DNA," says Dr. Adam Geyer, Kiehl's Consulting Dermatologist in a press release. "Additionally, cortisol, a molecule associated with energy metabolism that peaks during morning hours, is released in response to stress. Chronic and excessive cortisol can inhibit collagen synthesis, lipid synthesis and ultimately weaken the skin's barrier function, making it more vulnerable to dehydration, free radical-induced damage, infection and inflammation."

So how does Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate help your skin during the day exactly? It contains:

Ginger Root Oil to protect skin cells from oxidative damage and inflammation.

Sunflower Seed Oil to boost hydration, reduce redness and amp up skin's smoothness.

Taman Oil to prevent inflammation and improve hydration.

The oils are cold-pressed for maximum benefits.

So how does Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate perform?

I applied about two to three small drops to my face each morning. I don't wash my face in the morning, but I do every night. The scent is light and refreshing--a little less in your face than a citrus-scent, which works better for me pre-coffee. Most importantly, it absorbs quickly so I can get on with my a.m. routine, which includes a moisturizer with SPF as this doesn't offer any sun protection.

The Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate does make my skin more soft and supple. It imparts a glow that lasts through the morning. I may not feel exactly "revived" but at least my skin isn't letting on. Now if only I could find a fix for those under eye circles, once and for all!

Kiehl's Daily Reviving Concentrate is $46 for 1 0z. and is available at
