Last night I had the opportunity to stop by and chat with gorgeous Dita Von Teese about her new Von Follies limited edition lingerie collection for Destination Maternity. I was a little nervous to speak with the always impeccable burlesque star and business woman, but she instantly put me at ease and was spur friendly and forthright. Here’s an excerpt of our conversation:
After I had my baby last year, my body was weird, I was exhausted and it was a bit of a funky time. How is this line going to help new moms find the sexy?
I don’t even think about the word “sexy”. Because my relationship with lingerie—I started wearing lingerie when I was 15, I was obsessed with it when I was a little girl. And maybe I have an innocent view on it and some people equate sexy lingerie as something you put on for someone, but for me, I feel like it’s a right of passage of being woman. It’s symbolic of feminity and beauty and one of those little things you can for for yourself to make you feel good that doesn’t take any extra time out of your day.
I was a little not sure about doing a maternity collection at first, then I thought about all those things and what lingerie has meant in my life, and thought why wouldn’t someone want this? I’m not trying to tell women you have to wear black lace but it’s important that there are options. If I were going to have a baby and there was only one kind of nursing bra, I think I would start panicking. Lingerie means so much to me in my everyday life. I don’t think everyone has the same relationship that I do with lingerie but I’ve gotten good feedback and positive response from women.
Did you approach Destination Maternity about doing a line or did they come to you?
The brand came to me. I would never do something like that on my own. It was really important to me to be conscientious and get things right and being sensitive to people’s needs. I learned a lot in the process. And of course I had lots of help. I wanted to do magnets—I have had bras with magnets before. And they said, “No you can’t have that.” I learned a lot It was great to have the experts help guide me and look at my existing lingerie styles and how we can adapt them for their customers.
What is your trick for when you’re having an off day and need to feel more energetic?
I do something that makes me feel good. For me, that’s wearing red lipstick. I will take the time that it takes to put it on So if I’m headed to Pilates class, whatever I’m doing, I’ll take the time to put it on. II always have that minute.Find those things that make you feel good—figure out what it is for you—a certain hairdo or an outfit. I go to my works every time thing!
The Dita Von Teese capsule collection features nursing bras (with and without underwire) and panties in stretch satin with a 1950s pinup vibe. The pieces range from $39 to $55 and are available at DestinationMaternity.com.
